If you're interested in seeing a British-American rock band, you can catch Foreigner at the Casino Rama in Rama on Feb. 20. The group was formed in New York City in 1976 and is composed of rockers Mick Jones, Ian McDonald, American vocalist Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliot, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi as a sextet. Jones came up with the name from the fact that he, McDonald, and Elliott were English, while Gramm, Greenwood, and Gagliardi were Americans.
The band released their self-titled debut in March 1977 and sold over four million copies in the United States. The album, which was in the Top 20 for a year, included "Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," and "Long Long Way From Home." Foreigner's second album, Double Vision, was released in June 1978, and it sold five million records. "Hot Blooded," the title track "Double Vision" and "Blue Morning Blue Day" were the highlights. Their third album Head Games was also successful due to the thunderous "Dirty White Boy" and another title track hit, "Head Games."
If you'd rather see Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck perform together, you can grab Air Canada Centre event tickets and see the duo live on Feb. 21. The two performers, both members of the Yardbirds in the '60s with Beck serving as Clapton's replacement on lead guitar when the latter left the band in 1965, have set out on a co-heading tour in 2010. It's the first time the two legendary axe slingers have set out on a co-heading tour.
The two shared top billing earlier this year during a show at Tokyo's Saitama Super Arena, the first time the pair had ever co-headlined a venue. Beck told the press, "Eric and I played together in Japan earlier this year and had a blast. Since then we have been in regular contact and talked about doing a similar show for our fans. Looking forward to the shows in 2010."
Clapton stated, "I've always considered Jeff Beck to be one of the finest guitar players around. He's a friend, a great guy, and a truly gifted musician. We had such a fun time in Japan that it seemed natural to play together again." In October 2009, Beck filled in for Clapton at the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's 25th anniversary shows in New York, after Clapton was forced to cancel while recovering from gallstone surgery.
Also in Canada this month, the Washington Wizards take on the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre on Feb. 20. Antawn Jamison, Randy Foye, Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and the Wizards are looking to shut down Chris Bosh, Andrea Bargnani and the Raptors. But for a team that has played the past five games without suspended Gilbert Arenas and the past two without Mike Miller, it is putting more pressure on Wizards' starters to produce. Do they have enough strength and stamina to overpower Bosh and Bargnani on the road? It will take an all-around team effort, that much is clear.
